Is this job Part Time or Full time? Let’s see what turns up.

My blogs are usually focussed on imparting advice & offering up comments on job hunting, but this one, if you’ll forgive me, is a little indulgent musing on something I’m starting to see creep in since late last year on the jobs market. In Liverpool & Chester.

I’m getting super jobs in, but as I’m taking the specs down the clients are adding at the end ‘y’know I’m happy to take part time as well as full time. Lets see what turns up.’ And up til now, in my long year career, that request been a very rare occurrence. The jobs are usually one or the other & never the twain shall meet!

So……Is it good or bad news for job seekers?

Or Is it a reflection on the economy?

What I’m finding is that clients think they can get just as much out of a part time candidate – albeit a very good one  – as a full time one. They believe that the job situation is that tight that an exceptional candidate will come along that can complete nearly 100% of the tasks for 60% of the salary. And you know what? I’m finding that they’re right. And at this juncture its worth saying that I’m not talking about Firms trying to pay the least they can for the most they can get. It’s not that way. It’s sound business sense.

If the Part Time candidate with the skills they want is that good & that flexible (& of course they would have to be to be considered) & can prove to the client at interview that they really are capable & willing of doing a nigh on full time role in part time hours. Bingo. I’ll place them in these very either/or roles.

So does that make it scary for full time applicants? Should they be worried? Are we facing a slide towards a part time workforce? At this stage I’d say a cautious no…but more than ever, full time candidates, who make up the bulk of the workforce in most all organisations, need to be really really working for their salaries. If they leave, I see a future where more & more roles are coming on as part time.

At least initially anyway.
