Thinking of career changing? Quite tricky in this market

Roseanne Stockton, Director of Nu-Recruit in Chester.

I’m getting lots of CV’s of bright & energetic candidates. Good CV’s, strong CV’s but I have to admit that once I see the sentence ‘so I now feel I’d like to try something different’…….my heart sinks.

So why?

It’s quite a nervous market. Quite a conservative / cautious market & no matter how good your skills are & my expertise is, it’s proving to be practicsally  impossible to get candidates that don’t have a CV that isn’t historically a very close match to the role squeezed in. It just doesn’t happen. And I’m close to clients, I’m good with the quirky candidates & the niche roles, but the fact remains that, by & large, they want to see matching work histories, dovetailed similar experiences & in a perfect world similar industries too. It’s not a flamboyant market at all.

It’s also this: candidates are not in short supply. So whereas once upon  a time, to a degree, a candidate could swop / pick / choose, those days are gone. The jobs pop up, the similar candidates get the interviews (obviously that’s the key – the ‘career change’ ones are less likely to snare those interviews) & off they go off into the sunset.

Overall I’m finding this market not supportive of career changes & I find it so deflating to have to respond saying, though I’m obviously happy to help, I’m possibly unable to.

Finally. You might read this thinking – surely every job seeker knows this? They don’t. Thus the blog. I respond to every CV with the “I’ll see what I can do” but to get into HR when you’ve been a Teaching Assistant, or to do admin when you’re a Restaurant Manager – it’s not happening. So I can get annoyed, vexed, hurt & disappointed emails back from candidates who just don’t realize. It shouldn’t stop them trying BUT candidates just need to be aware.

I’m Roseanne Stockton. Chester SME Business Woman of 2013 & I successfully run Nu-Recruit.

I place permanent & temporary candidates of the very best quality into great local employers & jobs in Liverpool, Chester, Wirral & Manchester. In a no-fuss, no nonsense way.

And I love what I do. And I’m good at it!

It’s understandable but also quite a shame. It can be a real headache pinning down your goals and a little chopping and changing is inevitable for some. I’m glad I’m happy doing what I’m doing!
