Self belief & an open mind. Crucial for the employer & employee

"A mind once opened never closes" keeping an open mind in job searching & recruitmentLast month we placed a really unusual candidate from a very unusual background in an unusual job.

(Hopefully it won’t be the first time we place in this unusual job! As we placed successfully we’ll be expecting more business) but the circumstances of how & why we filled the job…& who with, is the reason for this blog.

So we placed a Motorbike Sales person…but let’s not beat around the bush here – we placed a female Motorbike sales person & not from a sales background nor from the industry. Not at all.

Obviously this happy story is partly down to our clients – the Employer. Without his inclusive open minded attitude it’d have gone nowhere. So massive kudos to him too.

She got the job over others with clearer evidenced skills & this is the really unusual bit. She took a several thousand pound pay cut to take the risk (any job is a risk – a sales job even more so) & she has NO experience in Sales. In fact….she was a Legal Administrator.

So is she mad? Has her new employer has lost his marbles? Did she ‘fool’ him? What possessed her to take the risk?

Here’s why & in some ways it’s a lesson to ALL job seekers: she knew her stuff. She did her homework & swotted up pre-interview. She did the research. Admittedly she had grown up around bikes but she faced the risk head-on that she was giving up a secure job in a more ‘secure’ position & realized the risk was as big for her as it was for them.

And slow & steady won the race.

So we placed her in a very male dominated industry with a SuperBrand, but still nonetheless, a very traditionally male environment & doubtless she’ll make a great start with them & sell sell SELL!

It was never about gender – although these bikes are big & some customers prefer males. It was about having the open mind from the employer combined with the hard work, mental attitude & confidence & self belief of the candidate. She proved as much as she could at interview stage that she could do it & she put the effort in & well…… she showed ‘em!

Doubtless she’ll be earning more than she could ever earn in a year or so as her bonus will stack up. She got her ‘Dream Job’.

Both the employer & the employee’s mindset won the day. I wish that were true more often.
