How Temping can add value to your CV, Prospects & future salary

Great Candidates Derserve Great Clients - Nu-Recruit, Chester, Liverpool, Wirral How Temping can add tangible value to your CV.

I got a call last week from one of my Liverpool clients wanting 2 Legal Secretaries, but with a particular focus on ones that knew a little about archiving. I called 2 great candidates & though neither were experts on Archiving, they’re working away & all is going well. Both candidates aren’t looking for Temporary work ideally, but they have bills to pay & want to be at work & its 8 weeks’ worth of work & so they happily did it.

I checked in yesterday with them & basically, partly due to the clients being super at training & explaining what the role is, they have literally improved both their CV’s in the space of one week.  Firstly, of course,  they now know how to professionally archive in a top end, Corporate Legal Firm. That’s a real skill to add to their CV’s.

In case you don’t know (pardon the pun) in Legal, it’s quite hard to break out of the area you work in to new Depts. One lady had done quite some years in Family Law. One had done quite a bit of Property. Legal secretaries tend to get sidelined into staying in the fields in which they work. The Family candidate is now working in Property. She’s never touched on it before. And the Property candidate is in Commercial Litigation. Same story. And when they finish these assignments the chances of working in a Permanent job in a different Dept than they previously worked have massively massively improved. So possibly have their salary expectations – especially the candidate with the history in  Family Law as it’s not one of the best paid Depts in Legal.

They know it & I know it.

So before you turn Temp work down on the basis of it being a little too far to travel, or its 30p less an hour than you’d like. Stop & rethink it. In an everyday permanent job it’s very hard to get exposure to new tasks / systems. When you Temp, you can get everything thrown at you. Those extra skills can open doors for you that never would have opened.

Finally, who’s to say the client won’t keep them on after the end of the booking as they’ve done such a good job? One thing’s for sure…..they wouldn’t be in with a shot if they’d chosen to turn it down.

I completely agree, I am temping right now and because I have had mostly every task or project given to me it has given me valuable skills I can bring into a permanent position.
I was only meant to be doing the job for six months and I am still with the company a year later.
